last week, sadly, ken's uncle bob died. he fought a brain tumor for 14 months, and it was a miracle that he survived as long, and vital, as he did. uncle bob and his family live in california, so for the funeral we drove 5 hours to l.a. the funeral was beautiful, as it was a celebration of a wonderful life. during this time of mourning we were able to teach our kids about death and heaven.
so today, we were watching curious george, and george was putting things into the ground to make them grow. and this is what abe said:
yesterday, uncle bob died
(yesterday, to my kids, is any time in the past)
where do we go when we die? i asked abe. he looked confused, so i filled in the details, our bodies go in the ground and our spirits go to heaven.
yeah, abe replied, and then heavenly father makes us better. he fixes our bodies. and our brains.
yes, abe, i replied, we will be resurrected.
and then i thought he was done with his conversation, as he sat in silence. but then the cutest line came out of his mouth:
and then we can be with our family. and we can be happy.
and that, my friends, is why we have kids. so they can say the cutest things and teach us the simplicity and purpose in the plan of salvation.
