it's a happy birthday day

there's nothing better than birthdays. i love celebrating birthdays with my kids because we have an excuse to go and play all day. for riley's first birthday, we swung up to the train park in scottsdale.

luckily, the weather complied, and low clouds hid the hot summer sun. we beat the heat and had fun riding the carousel and the train. ellie and riley were so excited!

ellie loves riding real horses, so the fake ones are just barely second best. she's practicing to ride real horses in snowflake next month.

otho and abe "raced" each other. get this...both won!

this was riley's first time on a carousel. i put her one the horse, and she was unsure, at first.

and then the ride started, and her whole body started shaking with fear. can you see the terror in her face? i ended up holding her the rest of the ride...and i don't think riley will be riding a plastic horses anytime soon.

cute ellie waiting for the train.

my best buds riding on the train. they've been doing this since they were younger then ellie and riley.

me and my baby-bugga-boo (ken's nickname for his kids).

after the train, we took another go on the carousel. the girls were pooped, so we sat on the carriage in front of the boys. riley liked this ride much better then the last.

as soon as we sat riley down, and she saw the cake that was for her, she became so excited. i LOVE this picture, because you can see the anticipation in her face. oh boy, she loves being the center of attention - but can you blame her? she's the youngest of four.

the tradition in our family is that on the first birthday, we let the birthday girl eat the cake all by herself. riley was unsure what to do at first, but as soon as daddy gave her the go-ahead, she dug in. with all of the giggling (coming from her siblings) riley thought this was the funniest, and funnest, experience. she really enjoyed the cake.

what a mess this child made!

here's a little video of her experience...it's hard to hear her giggle over her siblings laughter, but riley is sure having a good time. sorry it's so bouncy, but i was laughing through the entire thing, because it's so darned funny.

happy birthday my messy, sweet thing. i love you more than you'll ever know!

Oh, my word. I LOVED the picture of her anticipation face! LOVED IT! Also loved the video, with your boys yelling "eat it!". Oh, gosh, that was great. I love the tradition of letting the baby eat the cake on her first birthday. I'd never heard of that before, but I'll remember it, for sure!
