Karate

FEBRUARY 25, 2012

In September, Abe started karate. We are super lucky to have an amazing karate program only a few minutes away (when you live in a small town like we do, you feel very blessed when they have what you need and don't have to drive 20 minutes to get there!).

When Abe started karate, he was struggling with his self-esteem. He would get discouraged very easily, and he just didn't think he could do anything. This karate program changed everything for him. He was able to dedicate himself to karate (and man, it's hard work. Each class is an hour and a half of punching and kicking and meditating...and he's just a little guy).

Abe's hard work has paid off in a big way. This February, Abe earned his yellow belt. To me, as Abe's mom, his yellow belt symbolizes much more than a simple advancement. To me, that yellow belt symbolizes Abe's determination and strength to work hard every day, memorize Japanese phrases, and to build up his confidence so he can go to class and excel at this sport.

The type of karate Abe is learning is Yoseikan. To get his yellow belt Abe needed to memorize Taikyoku Ichi and San-Bon Kumite sequences in the Chito-Ryu style.

He also had to complete a small written test. He worked hard, and passed with flying colors! Go Abe!
